Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs step into Bill C\u002D18 fight as wildfires rage

Proponents of regulation have argued that social media platforms are the predominant beneficiaries of the digital advertising gained from news articles, and should share some of that revenue with struggling publishers. But Meta says the share of revenue drawn from news content is overstated and argues that media outlets benefit from subscriptions and increased readership because their stories are posted on its platforms.

Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and B.C. Premier David Eby joined other government officials calling for Meta to lift the ban. Premier David Eby meets with elected Chief Rosanne Casimir as they tour the Tselletkwe Lodge, which was created as a safe place for Indigenous evacuees and others who’ve been displaced due to the wildfires, in Kamloops, B.C., Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023.Eby said the company needed to open up access to critical information that could help keep residents safe as the province grappled with devastating wildfires that had forced thousands of people from their homes.

“This is not a time for making that political point,” Eby said. “This is a time for Facebook and Instagram to use the network that they built, frankly on the backs of local media, to communicate with British Columbians about what they need to hear, what information they need, about what’s happening in their local communities.”

Meta spokesman Andy Stone said people in Canada can still use Facebook and Instagram to “connect with loved ones,” mark themselves as “safe” from the fires and access official government information, including crisis response pages.
