Anthony Allain Samaké is trying to move on and talk about all the positives while playing with his current hockey team, the under\u002D18 AAA Ottawa Junior Senators.
Last season, while playing with the under-15 AAA Gatineau Intrepide, both he and teammate Koby Francis were subjected to repeated racist verbal attacks and gestures from many of their own teammates. After an internal investigation, six players were suspended for what the team officials described as “deplorable incidents that occurred on and off the ice.” The entire squad was sent to education and awareness classes focussed on eliminating discrimination.
If there can be any positives from the ugly experience, it’s that Allain Samaké’s story prompted other minor hockey players in Gatineau and across the country to go public with similar tales about suffering verbal abuse.Article content “He’s a great kid,” said Joseph. “With everything that he went through last season, to see him happy and around the rink, it’s great.”
