An investigation is underway to determine how two helicopters collided into each other at Sea World on New Year's Day.
The two aircrafts, operated by Sea World Helicopters, were conducting joy flights on New Year's Day when the rotor blade of a chopper taking off crashed into another that appeared to be landing. pilot Ashley Jenkinson Jenkinson, British couple Ron and Diane Hughes, and Sydney mother Vanessa Tadros.
"What we have to remember is that is a very, very busy area, it was probably one of the busiest days of the year in terms of scenic flights and joy flights," he told Sky News Australia's Kenny Heatley. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau Commissioner, which will probe a number of areas including the qualifications of the pilots, maintenance, the helicopters' airframes and Sea World's procedures.
“But because this happened on a very, very busy day there’s a lot of footage available and I believe even some footage from passengers inside the aircraft, so that will be a very key element in the ATSB investigation." He praised the efforts from the other pilot to land the chopper after being showered with glass from the windscreen and the damage to the helicopter's controls.
Both choppers remained at the scene on Tuesday morning before being removed hours later and placed on tow trucks and sent away to be assessed.
