Authorities work overnight to protect Tennant Creek from bushfire ahead of wind change

Police say they have a 'high level of confidence' that containment lines established overnight will protect Tennant Creek from a raging bushfire, which is expected to move closer to the town today.

"And not just those containment lines, but then some of the other locations between the vacant crown land where it's burning now, and then other activities that are underway in the Waramungu Land Trust and then closer to Tennant Creek." Acting Commander Gray-Spence said members of the Australian Defence Force were also on the ground, "cutting though known tracks" to reduce the fire's fuel load near the town.

He said resources deployed from South Australia were set to arrive in Tennant Creek on Wednesday afternoon., which gives police emergency powers to move people and assets.
