The travellers had been crossing from Canada to the States, authorities believe
Police in Akwesasne, along with coast guard helicopters and dive teams were scouring the shores of the St. Lawrence River for a missing child Friday morning after finding six bodies in a marsh in Snye, Akwesasne in Quebec the previous evening.
O’Brien said the incident had nothing to do with the recent closure of the Roxham Road, formerly a frequent crossing for people seeking asylum in Canada, until a new border deal was reached between Canada and the U.S. last week. The deceased travellers, she said, were moving in the opposite direction, from Canada to the States.
“We have seen an increase of people passing through Akwesasne and gaining entry into the U.S.,” she said. “Since January of 2023, we have had 48 separate incidents.”In February, Akwesasne police put out a notice alerting the community to an increase in illegal entries to Akwesasne. The man, who asked not to be identified, said he sometimes counts as many as 10 a day and that they are a nuisance for locals.
“We can’t put up cameras because if somebody gets caught they will retaliate against us,” he said. “We just try to keep them off our property and mind our own business.”
