Australia's 2023 vintage is well down on the 10-year average thanks to challenging weather and economic factors — but the industry hopes higher quality fruit will mean better prices.

abc.net.au/news/smallest-australian-wine-grape-vintage-since-2000/102588770Challenging conditions have dropped the 2023 Australian wine grape vintage to its lowest recorded harvest since 2000.

Wine Australia market insights manager Peter Bailey said the latest report demonstrated the ongoing trend of "premiumisation" — where higher quality wine from cool climates was achieving higher prices. However, he said the average price paid for grapes was down as well as tonnages, particularly for red grapes.

The persistent wet weather across much of southern Australia last year made it difficult to manage grapes and led to lower yields, delayed ripening and difficulty managing disease. The total estimated value of the 2023 crush was $983 million, a decrease of $229 million on last year and the lowest since 2015.
