In a test for a new military pact between Japan and Australia, RAAF pilots took part in dog fights and other military exercises off the Sea of Japan this week.
| Australian airforce pilots are taking part in historic joint exercises in Japan, testing their supersonic aircraft for the first time in the country, as the two allies boost military ties amid growing concerns of conflict in the region with China.
The Australian F-35A aircraft taking off and landing from the Komatsu Air Base, used by the Japanese during World War Two, were symbolic of Australia’s deepening military ties with allies in the region preparing for aRoyal Australian Air Force officials overseeing the huge operation with the Japanese Self-Defence Forces say the RAA has improved access for hundreds of personnel, aircraft and support equipment involved in the exercises.
Wing Commander Melanie Buswell, who is overseeing the Bushido Guardian exercise, says the RAA means it now takes days rather than months to line up the logistics required for Australian personnel to train in Japan and vice versa.“Previously we would spend months negotiating the terms of the activities, legal status of personnel, how to get in. The RAA sets a framework where that is set exercise to exercise.
