THE AUSSIE'S ON THE BOARD! An incredibly dramatic AusGP and OscarPiastri comes home in eighth 😍 MORE:

There was utter chaos at the Australian Grand Prix in a historic race which saw three red flags and a dramatic conclusion, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen eventually claiming victory.

It was decided to set the order as it was before the lap 57 restart, except with the crashed cars removed, meaning Verstappen won from Hamilton and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. Hamilton and Verstappen dashed away from the pack after the race restart but the Red Bull easily took the race lead on lap 12 and was safe as houses until the stoppage. With Verstappen well out in front the second half of the race became about Perez’s chances of reducing the deficit to his teammate.

“Max got a little bit greedy trying to hold onto first into turn one,” David Coulthard explained on F1 TV. Another big incident saw Albon in the wall midway through the lap and the safety car was again deployed on lap 7.“This is going to be a massive disadvantage,” Hamilton said on team radio. By lap 12 Hamilton and Verstappen quickly opened up a three-second gap to third-placed Alonso before the Red Bull easily passed the Mercedes on the back straight to take the race lead.“Forget it with that Red Bull straight line speed, it’s done,” Jolyon Palmer said on F1 TV.Russell moved into fourth with an overtake on Gasly.

The Aussie made amends three laps later by getting past Tsunoda for 11th but could not immediately close the gap to Ocon in 10th. Verstappen got a huge start and stayed first but there were huge crashes behind with both Alpines in the wall, Stroll and Alonso crashing, Perez running in the grass and plenty more carnage.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was fourth from Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, Perez, McLaren’s Lando Norris, Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu. However Sainz was given a five-second penalty for causing a collision with Alonso. After poor qualifying sessions Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas will now both have to start from the pits.

But his disappointing stint at McLaren saw the team having to help him make major changes, compared to when he was last at the team.“He grew up with us we had a lot of fun together. I’m sure he’s missing not driving but it’s good to have him playing a role. In his post-qualifying press conference, Verstappen added: “I am not a fan of [the proposals] at all. When we do all that kind of stuff, the weekend becomes very intense and we already do a lot of races.
