Australian govt needs to ‘prioritise’ regional visas for immigrants

The Australian government “hasn’t understood” the importance of “prioritising” regional visa programs for immigrants to maintain a skilled workforce in the country, says Deputy Opposition leader Sussan Ley.

“Perhaps their first port of call would have been a city and maybe that’s an easier outcome,” she told Sky News Australia.

“But once they moved to the regions, they saw huge benefits and even if they only stayed 6 months or 2 years, we still had that workforce. “If you don’t get the skilled workforce in the regions you can close down whole industries – you can have a health sector that doesn’t work at all, you can have a town without doctors, you can have your real failure for the people that live there.”
