Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced Magnitsky-style sanctions will be imposed on Iran and Russian operatives in response to human rights violations and abuses, which has left Australians 'appalled'.
Iran's morality police has been punished by Magnitsky-style sanctions over its response to the anger and weeks of protest over the death of Mahsa Amini.
The Basij Resistance Force, including six Iranian individuals, will also be sanctioned for its deadly response from the country's security forces. "Sanctions are not our only choice and they will rarely be our first choice. It's about making the best judgment I can in this role... at the right time. "The supply of drones to Russia is evidence of the role Iran plays in destabilising global security. This listing highlights that those who provide material support to Russia will face consequences," it read.
“We call on Iran to immediately halt executions and will continue to work through the multilateral system and with partners to hold Iran to account.” The opposition politician, who has previously spoken out about corruption in Russia and critic of President Vladimir Putin, was poisoned with a nerve agent while in Siberia.
