Already a subscriber?The Australian Defence Force will have its first chief drawn from the navy in 22 years, coming at a crucial time as the military beds downand spends billions on new warships amid warnings China will be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027.
Vice Admiral Johnston will serve just two years in the position though, suggesting the government has opted for a steady-as-she-goes approach, rather than appoint someone for the long haul to drive through changes critics of Defence say are badly needed.
In Vice Admiral Johnston’s favour was his familiarity working with the other services, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying the selection was an “easy choice”.
