India, Indonesia and other nations agreed to improve labour standards under a US-led trade initiative in the Indo-Pacific region involving Australia.
The new supply chain deal is aimed at reducing dependence on China for critical products and improving crisis co-ordination among the US and its allies to better weather pandemics and wars. But it also promotes improved labour rights, which had been considered one of the more difficult areas to gain consensus.
“The proposed agreement would establish a new advisory board, consisting of government, worker and employer representatives, as well as a subcommittee composed of government representatives, to support the IPEF partners’ promotion of labour rights,” the statement said. Australia and the US are also working to strengthen supply of critical minerals needed for the energy transition. Mr Farrell discussed opportunities to supply the US auto industry with rare earths needed for electric vehicles, during his visit to Ford in Detroit.
