Officials on Norfolk Island say they are expecting a tough 24 hours with destruction to trees, properties and power lines as Cyclone Gabrielle passes through before heading for Auckland.
The category two system is expected to bring the most destructive weather conditions in 30 years to Norfolk Island when it passes through on Saturday night before heading for Auckland.Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is forecast to bring gale-force winds and high waves to parts of Norfolk Island.
Norfolk Island residents are bracing for damage from Cyclone Gabrielle, which is expected to bring the most destructive weather to hit the remote outpost in three decades. "Gale-force winds and high waves are likely occurring around parts of the island, and conditions may worsen overnight as the centre of the cyclone moves past," the bureau said. There were some indications that the island may avoid the system's strongest winds, however, a period of destructive winds with gusts up to 140km/h was still possible during Saturday evening or early Sunday.
"We expect the centre of the circulation to move across Norfolk Island overnight and then start moving away from Norfolk Island early hours of Sunday morning. The cyclone was reclassified as a category two storm - down from a category three - as it neared Norfolk Island. The bureau was urging people to consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas, and for boaters to consider delaying their voyage if they planned to cross shallow water and ocean bars.
