Australian PM tells Shangri-La Dialogue boosting defence aims to prevent war
SINGAPORE - Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday said his nation’s decision to boost its defence capabilities is not to prepare for war but to prevent it, as he outlined his country’s vision for the Indo-Pacific region at the Shangri-La Dialogue.
“But they are also an investment in regional stability, strengthening our capacity to contribute to the collective security of the Indo-Pacific,” he said at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore’s Orchard Road area. “Multilateral institutions are essential to writing the rules and keeping them relevant. But reinforcing the rules and upholding them depends on our capability as well,” he added.
Mr Albanese’s speech also comes at a time of heightened global attention towards Australia’s foreign and defence policies.under the Aukus pact with Britain and the US, aimed at countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.over three decades on the programme, which has irritated China. The first of the submarines could enter service in the early 2030s, subject to approval from the US Congress.
