Day four at Lord's saw the sublime and ridiculous go head-to-head, as some stellar performances from Australia's quicks help balance out some turgid play and controversial umpiring.

And though we'll never admit it, when you take a step back and look at it from their perspective, it's pretty hard to argue.

The best was saved for the end of the day, when those stunning performances from Australia's fast bowling stalwarts set up what will most likely be a victory and a commanding 2-0 series lead. About an hour into the day, England had the same realisation Australia reached two days ago, and Douglas Jardine stumbled upon about 90 years ago — if they bowl nothing but short balls and put all their fielders on the leg side, the batters can't really do much else but get out.And so that's what happened. England bowled bouncers and the Australian batters ducked under them. Sometimes they defended them. On the odd occasion, they did the unthinkable and tried to score from them.

And just as if the whole day hadn't already become silly enough, out limped Nathan Lyon to the crease with a cricket bat as a makeshift crutch.
