The population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians has surged past the million person mark.

Latest calculations from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates the population of First Nations people surged past a million people in 2022.By 2031, the population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is expected to reach 1.2 million, with 31 per cent under the age of 14.Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals the milestone was likely passed in 2022, with Brisbane and Perth tipped to be the fastest growing areas over the next seven years.

Kokatha, Mirning, Wangkangurru and Arrernte woman, Jacinta Haseldine, a mother of three including Nia, describes motherhood as "rewarding". "I would love to have more kids but financially that's questionable, I don't know if we can afford to," she said. Australian Bureau of Statistics director of Demography Beidar Cho says the majority of First Nations people in Australia live in cities.The ABS said the population of First Nations people was projected to continue to grow everywhere except for Katherine and Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.

"For certain states and territories, the driver is also due to interstate migration, so other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from other states coming into those states, and I guess the opposite is true when people move away from the states as well." Dr Liz Allen, demographer and social researcher at the Australian National University says the data is an opportunity to celebrate the strength of Australia's First Nations population."For me, seeing this one million mark is like seeing First Nations people take their rightful place.
