Australian migration system is suffering from a decade of ‘breathtaking neglect’: O’NeilHome Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil says migration has helped Australia become a “prosperous and secure” nation, but the current systems are suffering from a “decade of genuinely breathtaking neglect”. “In the 1970’s Gough Whitlam blew open the dusty doors of power to bury the White Australia Policy and welcome migrants from around the world, 50 years later, multiculturalism is still central to our Australian identity,” Mr O’Neil said at the National Press Club of Australia. “In the 1990’s Paul Keating used skilled migration to drive Australia out of recession, migration helped deliver the longest period of continuous economic growth in recorded history anywhere in the world, in our country, Australia. “Migration helped us become a more prosperous and secure Australia because the system was designed to meet the challenges of the moment and that is not true of our system today. “Our migration system is suffering from a decade of genuinely breathtaking neglect, it is broken, it is failing our businesses, it is failing migrants themselves and most important of all, it is failing Australians, and that cannot continue. “Our economy is stuck in a productivity rut and Australians are suffering because of it, migration can help us change that.”

‘Unpleasant tasks’: Governor-General reflects on Somalia deploymentThree decades after Australia took part in Operation Solace – a peacekeeping mission in Somalia – Governor-General David Hurley has reflected on the challenges he faced commanding the 1st Battalion. Mr Hurley faced “unpleasant tasks” as his Battalion was instructed to create a secure environment for NGOs to help them deliver food into contested regions. “We did test our doctrine and we found that although we had trained a lot in Australia and we were deployed long distances in Australia, we hadn’t really set ourselves up properly logistically to support an operation that distance away from Australia,” he told Sky News Australia. The Governor-General said the soldiers learned “a lot of lessons” in the ten-year period leading up to the East Timor deployment in 1999. “Many of the people who served in my battalion then, or in the other organisations that were in Somalia, were in senior positions by the time we went into Timor.”
