The United Kingdom has also set a deadline of June 2024 for airports to have new CT X-ray scanners that provide 3D images for security staff.

The Australian government has no plans to follow Britain in ending the ban on large liquids, gels and creams being carried on board international flights, despite new technology making the restrictions redundant.

British Secretary of State for Transport Mark Harper said it was the end of the “tiny toiletry” and time-consuming queues at security.“The tiny toiletry has become a staple of airport security checkpoints, but that’s all set to change. I’m streamlining cabin bag rules at airports while enhancing security,” Harper said in a statement.

James Goodwin, chief executive of the Australian Airports Association , said he hoped Australia would keep pace with new international standards and the rollout of the new equipment which is expected to be completed in Australia by 2024-25.
