Ranked sixth in the world, the Malawi Queens become the first team to hold the Diamonds accountable in Cape Town, testing their depth at the Netball World Cup.
Sophie Garbin and the Australian attack had to work hard against Malawi in Cape Town.abc.net.au/news/australia-challenged-by-malawi-queens-before-super-subs-seal-win/102676776Malawi has handed Australia its first real challenge at the Netball World Cup, holding the Diamonds accountable for half a match and becoming the first team to outscore them in a quarter at Cape Town.
Quick ball speed was required, as Koenen copped some tough competition from Malawi goalkeeper Loreen Ngwira and was also sandwiched a couple of times when Towera Vinkhumbo dropped back to help double up on the 190cm shooter. Centre Takondwa Lwazi was a stand-out for the Queens in the fightback, scrapping low. A lot has been made about height at this World Cup, but as the shortest player on court at 160cm, Lwazi knows how to use her stature for good and is very difficult to defend.
But Malawi and their African sisters opt to use this method from the very first centre pass, confusing the opposition and dragging them up the court to create space. These super subs had an immediate impact, seeing the Diamonds score the first three goals of the third quarter to take the lead. Now 12 in front, Marinkovich sent in her remaining players with fresh legs and the side went on to mimic the 21-9 effort in back-to-back quarters.
