Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia’s relationship with China is “important” ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday night.
“China is our most important trading partner: it represents more than 25 per cent of our exports and one in four of our jobs relies upon our trade,” Mr Albanese told a press conference in Shanghai on Monday.
“It’s an important relationship. It has changed in 50 years, China has changed, Australia has changed and the relationship has changed.” “What is important and what needs to be consistent is the way that Australia deals with our international relations: that we are upfront, that we are respectful, that we deal through diplomacy.”
Mr Albanese’s visit to China is the first made by any Australian prime minister since Malcolm Turnbull visited in 2016.
