Despite his best efforts, Auston Matthews didn’t get one goal, let alone get close to an NHL-record third straight hat trick, as the Chicago Blackhawks were the more detailed team in a 4-1 win at Scotiabank Arena.
The Monday blahs with a low-ranked opponent and unheralded goaltender have often conspired against the Leafs at home in recent years and when they blew some coverage assignments and couldn’t break out clean, history repeated itself. The Leafs have given up 12 goals in three games. Ironically, that’s where Matthews came closest on his team-leading seven shots when he and Mitch Marner were helping defuse a John Klingberg minor. Head coach Sheldon Keefe pulled Woll with more than three minutes to go, with Taylor Hall’s empty netter called back on video review for offside as was William Nylander’s 6-on-5 before Alex Vlasic did find the empty cage.
Undrafted Swede Arvid Soderblom, with a career NHL record of 2-13-2 and a .891 save percentage, didn’t see much early action in Chicago’s net. Lukas Reichel got enough of a Nylander pass to Matthews to disrupt the latter’s one good early chance. Marner stumbled into a penalty 35 seconds into Toronto’s first power play.
