Parts of eastern Australia are set to shiver through icy temperatures over the next few days after a strong cold front swept across the country's south-east, writes Alison Osborne.

This chill is now heading further north as the weather system responsible also brings towering waves to coastal NSW.

The nearby town of Oakey, where the thermostat went down to -5.6C at 6.30am, had its coldest May morning on record. As the system moved out to sea it slowed, and intensified to a strong low, which has helped to maintain the cold, southerly winds and drive down the"feels" like temperature for millions on Monday.

The low generated storm force winds running parallel to the NSW coast, driving up wave heights to more than five metres in the surf zone, increasing the threat of coastal erosion from Forster to Batemans Bay.
