Australia have secured their first home series win over South Africa in 17 years, crushing the Proteas by an innings and 182 runs in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. 7Cricket 7NEWS
The defeat was described as a “hammering” by South African captain Dean Elgar, whose side copped exactly that from Ponting in commentary after the final wicket.
“Not this current time - they found it very difficult. The last six days of cricket for them has been almost a nightmare.“There was not enough fight, not enough urgency, as far as I’m concerned . A couple of run outs is probably a bit of an indication of the lack of desperation from the South African batting unit.”Ricky Ponting was the last Australia captain to win at home against South Africa back in 2005-06.
“I thought the way the two veterans of our side, Steve Smith and David Warner, batted in the heat was as gutsy cricket as you’re ever going to get.” “I can tell you a lot of the guys are hurting in the changeroom and we’ve got try to restore a bit of pride.”David Warner claimed man-of-the-match honours after ending his near three-year wait for a red-ball ton with a brilliant double-century.
