Australian veteran Cameron McEvoy has sent an ominous warning to his rivals with a blistering swim in the 50m freestyle heats on Thursday. McEvoy, who is the first Australian male to compete at four Olympics , won his heat in a scorching time of 21.32. It rocketed the 30-year-old to the top of the timesheets and the favourite for the gold medal. “Cam McEvoy was surprised with that in a very good way,” swimming great Ian Thorpe said in commentary.

” American reigning champion Caleb Dressel finished sixth, but did enough to just scrape into the semi-finals. Aussie Olympic debutant Ben Armbruster also booked his spot in the semis with the eighth-fastest time overall. Earlier, Kaylee McKeown safely progressed to the semi-finals of the 200m backstroke with a comfortable swim. The defending champion, who is chasing an unprecedented back-to-back double in the 100m and 200m backstroke, won her heat in a time of 2:08.89.
