On Sunday pound-for-pound king, Aussie Alex Volkanovski, attempts mission impossible by trying to dethrone lightweight champion Russian Islam Makhachev.
No.1 pound-for-pound fighter and featherweight champion, will battle the much taller, stronger and fancied lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, 31.The Dagestani Russian is mooted to be the second coming of the sport’s greatest of all time: the notorious grappler Khabib Nurmagomedov, whose father famously forced him to wrestle bears as a child. Nurmagomedov retired in 2021 from his mixed-martial arts career as the undefeated UFC lightweight champion.
When dominating all-comers in the UFC’s featherweight division, Volk, as he is known, weighs in at just 68 kilograms of granite muscle. But when terrorising opponents across the rugby league pitch, his fighting weight was a touch shy of 100 kilograms.
Given the delayed start, they actively sought out the most ambitious and storied opponents to fast-track Volk’s progress. He is either going to gas out, or I go to sleep or die.” And Ortega’s choke, which was previously regarded as inescapable, did indeed eventually start to slip. “The lights started coming back on, and I managed to roll him over and break him.” Pinning Ortega to the canvas, Volkanovski then launched into savage ground-and-pound using his elbows and fists.
