A Melbourne man was horrified to discover ‘masses’ of black insects in his garden after heavy rainfall.Other locals were horrified at the images, with many sharing their own experiences with the insects.“I get so many of these in my house, I hate them,” a third added. The insects are likely to be Portuguese millipedes which often plague backyards in Australia around this time of year as they enjoy autumn conditions. However, they are not known to be dangerous and often scatter on their own over time.
According to WA’s Department of Agriculture, the insects make a secretion which is composed of organic chemicals called quinones, which make them distasteful to predators such as birds.
