UNB Reds forward Mark Tobin fights for the ball against a trio of Cape Breton Capers during AUS Final 6 men's basketball quarter-final action Friday at Scotiabank Centre. Cape Breton won the game 95-89 in overtime. - RYAN TAPLIN / THE CHRONICLE HERALDOsman Omar was not ready to call it a career in Atlantic university basketball.
The CBU men’s basketball program’s all-time leading scorer, Omar returned this season for one more crack at an elusive conference title. He only shot 6-for-23 from the field and missed on all six three-point attempts on Friday, but it was his clutch play in the extra period which earned him player of the game honours.
Ruta, the six-foot-11 sophomore centre from Calgary who was dominant inside the paint, drained a long three-pointer with 42 seconds left in overtime to put CBU ahead 91-89. He then caused a UNB turnover which led to Omar sealing the game with an untouched layup. UNB freshman guard Marcus Barnes, the AUS rookie of the year, led all scorers with 31 points. He had 13 points through the first five minutes of the game.
