Weeks out from the release of Australia’s plan to obtain nuclear-powered submarines, a member of one of US Congress’s most powerful new committees has raised security questions about an Australian ship builder.

| A member of the US Congress’s powerful new committee on China says he wants Australian company Austal stopped from building part of the nuclear-powered Virginia class submarines that are central to the, because of his concerns the company could be the source of military secrets leaking to the Chinese.

“We would like to see our Navy completely disengaged from Austal so that we could be convinced that Austal is completely disengaged from the Chinese government – the Chinese Communist Party we were not very pleased with.”US Congressman Neal Dunn supports AUKUS but says we have to take nuclear secrets as seriously as we ever have.

“We’re going to keep pressure on this from multiple angles. Obviously, I’m on the China committee. That’s one angle,” he said.US Congressman Neal Dunn tells The Australian Financial Review’s Matthew Cranston that Austal should not be building part of the Virginia class submarines until Congress is confident they have secure firewalls from Chinese government.
