Winnipeg man William Acheson alleges the Manitoba government overcharged speeders an estimated $36 million

A Winnipeg man is trying to launch a class-action lawsuit against the Manitoba government that alleges it overcharged people an estimated $36 million in photo radar tickets.

“They were charging for every kilometre over the speed limit, so they weren’t excluding that buffer the way that the regulations prescribed,” Naomi Kovak, one of the plaintiff’s lawyers, said in an interview Thursday from Vancouver. The statement of claim contains allegations that have not been proven in court. The provincial government, which was only recently served the claim, has not filed a statement of defence. No one from the government was immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit centres on regulations under the Highway Traffic Act approved by the Progressive Conservative cabinet in 2017.
