Digging the Dig In Summit
“This, we think, was the very first time all the food system players across Atlantic Canada have come together,” said organizing committee member Robert Cervelli following his closing words to attendees, participants and volunteers.
Asked if there are plans to hold a similar summit on an annual basis, Cervelli said he doesn’t think that will happen but what was accomplished over the three days and the final act of people leaving their contact information and range of involvement, should help to lessen the need for another large formal gathering.
Moderator Phil Ferraro leads a panel discussion titled Building Local Food Systems Policy and Governance with panelists Krista Tobin , Leticia Smillie, Sarah Crocker and Katrina Cristall. Richard MacKenziefaculty member Jillian Ruhl who described the summit as “excellent,” while adding she’ll need a couple of days to sort through all the notes she took.
Ruhl said it was also a good opportunity for her to connect with possible guest speakers for her students or service-learning opportunities. “Some projects were of particular interest,” Cashen said. “You hear whispers of them, the developments as they arrive, but to be in the same place with the people and hear them share their stories, that has been most impactful.Cashen added talking to small-scale producers was of interest because it’s something she would like to be able to do someday.student, teaching assistant and former chef Justin Andrews said he came to the summit for a number of reasons and is going away inspired.
