Multiple neighbourhoods have burnt to the ground, with a resident of one describing it as 'like an apocalypse'.

At least six people have died after wildfires fanned by winds caused extensive damage on Hawaii's Maui island.

Wildfires have killed at least 36 people and devastated much of the resort city Lahaina on Hawaii's Maui island, forcing thousands to evacuate as some fled into the ocean to escape the smoke and flames. "We just had the worst disaster I've ever seen. All of Lahaina is burnt to a crisp. It's like an apocalypse," said Lahaina resident Mason Jarvi, who escaped from the city.

With firefighters battling three major blazes, western Maui was closed to all but emergency workers and evacuees. "The situation is really fluid. They are doing search and rescue as we speak," said National Guard Major General Kenneth Hara. Dustin Johnson, a native of San Diego, was in West Maui's Lahaina working for a charter boat company that takes tourists on two-hour tours from the harbour.
