Turkish authorities say a mine explosion has left 22 workers dead, but it is unclear how many of the 110 people who were underground at the time remain trapped.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said at least 28 miners were rescued with injuries from the coal mine in the Black Sea coastal province of Amasra, where 110 people were working at the time of the explosion. The cause of the explosion was unknown, Turkey's Disaster Management Authority said, retracting an earlier statement that the blast was caused by a transformer.

Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said the explosion is likely to have been caused by firedamp, a reference to flammable gases found in coal mines.Provincial governor Nurtac Arslan said 49 people were waiting to be brought to the surface, while mining trade union Maden-Is reported 35 were still trapped.The explosion occurred 300 metres below the entrance of the mine at around 3:15pm local time, Mr Arslan's office said.
