Qantas shares dragged the ASX down 0.4 per cent on a big day for results, adding thrust to the softening sentiment around the outlook for profits.Qantas shares dropped 6.8 per cent to $6.03 on Thursday despite the airline’s strong half-year results which recorded an underlying pre-tax profit of $1.42 billion in the half year to December.

Qantas had forecast an underlying pre-tax profit of between $1.35 billion and $1.45 billion. Broker Jarden said its guidance for capital expenditure came in higher than expected.The company reported its net profit jumped 67.1 per cent to $45.1 million, with the growth driven by a gain on the sale of Australian Executor Trustees Limited .

The company said active customers climbed 4 per cent on the prior corresponding half to 7.3 million, on total transaction value up 10 per cent to $4.9 billion. Fund manager Perpetual's shares were down 2.8 per cent to $25.95. It reported an interim underlying profit of $67 million – a figure that is within its guidance range of $65 million to $70 million. That figure was 15 per cent lower than the first half of 2022, and 3 per cent down on the previous half year.The business reported a $1.
