Australian shares are poised to rise at the open. In contrast, shares struggled in New York as data showed that consumers are starting to slow their spending and Salesforce’s slump hammered the tech sector. Dell, seen as a proxy for Nvidia the last month, fell 5.2 per cent during the session and slumped another 12 per cent in extended trading after its latest results disappointed investors. It reported after the closing bell. On Wall St overnight: Dow -0.9% S&P -0.6% Nasdaq -1.
“We see growth losing much more momentum over the next couple of quarters, as the recent tailwinds to consumers’ spending fade while high interest rates start to weigh more heavily,” Pantheon Macroeconomics said in a note. The focus has now shifted to the release at 10.30pm Friday AEST of April’s personal income, spending and price reports. Economists expect the personal consumption expenditures price index minus food and energy — due on Friday — to rise 0.
