SIBU: Sibu Coffeeshop and Restaurant Owners Association believes that eateries here will not increase the price of beverages when the price of sugar goes up in May.

"I don't think eateries will hike their beverage prices in line with the intended price increase of sugar. I also don't encourage them to adjust their price," said association chairman Tong Ing Kok at a press conference on Wednesday ."A cup of Kopi-O Peng with sugar is between RM2.20 to RM2.50. This price is already quite high. So one should not raise their prices just because the price of sugar will be increased," he said.

Tong said this when asked on talk in town that beverage prices will go up by 20 sen per cup due to the sugar price adjustment. "This is not a rumour as the manufacturers intend to increase it by between RM1 to RM1.20 per kg in May," he said. Tong however said the association hoped manufacturers, if they have to make price revisions, will consider hiking it by 50% of the intended RM1 to RM1.20 per kilogramme.
