Stephen Jones has declared there is more to the federal budget than winning a 'popularity contest' after a poll on Monday revealed voters were unconvinced it would help households.

and fear it will instead make inflation worse, according to the latest Newspoll survey.

Close to one third argued it was"bad", with 39 per cent saying it will be neither good or bad for families who continue to struggle with rising grocery and energy bills. "Of course everyone wants our economic policy to win a popularity contest. The most important test is whether it's an economically responsible budget," he said on Monday.

The Assistant Treasurer said he understood some of the decisions in the budget had not been received well, but stressed they had to be made in the best interest of the nation. "I think we've got the balance right in all of the issues. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating," he added.
