Anchorage Assembly Vice Chair Meg Zaletel has now joined Chair Christopher Constant in saying the decision to postpone the hearing confirmation for Anchorage Police Chief Designee Bianca Cross was in line with standard approval procedure.
Confirmation hearing for Anchorage police chief-designee postponedANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage Assembly Vice Chair Meg Zaletel has now joined Chair Christopher Constant in saying the decision toZaletel said in a statement that the appointment of Cross is “consistent” with prior APD Chief transitions.
“Chief McCoy was originally appointed by Acting Mayor Quinn-Davidson and it was the newly elected Mayor Bronson who brought the appointment forward for confirmation,” Zaletel stated. “The appointment of Chief Designee Cross is being treated similarly. We will see who the new Mayor elect brings forward for this position once in office and act accordingly.
“Since July 1 is the date the new administration begins, and we are eight days into a 30 day transition, it isn’t fair to Chief Designee Cross to put her through the confirmation process at this time,” Constant wrote. “The decision on the appointment now belongs to the incoming administration. The question of qualifications remains in the hands of the Assembly.”
Cross was first appointed as chief designee in April of this year by Mayor Dave Bronson, following the retirement of Chief Michael Kerle. She is the first woman to hold the position.Cross began her career with APD as an Academy recruit in 1997. Within her 26-year career with the department, she has upheld a number of roles spanning from patrol officer and supervisor to most recently serving as captain of APD’s detective unit.
LaFrance will officially be sworn in as mayor on July 1. LaFrance will become the first elected female mayor of Anchorage.
