Abatement contractor will first do a test run in one corner of the library, before a tender is issued to complete the work in the rest of the building

When Sault Ste. Marie's downtown library opened in July 1967, it was considered the jewel of the waterfront, arguably our city's nicest building.

The Orlando, Florida-based Mesothelioma Centre reports asbestos exposure is the No. 1 cause of global work-related deaths, with about 90,000 deaths a year reported from asbestos-related diseases. "This is an area which can be reached by the public and has been vandalized in a number of places," Matthew MacDonald, library chief executive officer, said in a 2018 report to the library board.

Air tests then found it was safe to be in the library, but parts of the building were cordoned off to staff and the public until the asbestos could be dealt with. "The hazards of asbestos were not known until many years later. For more than 10 years, the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library has undergone annual asbestos inspections to ensure health and safety of the public and staff until the asbestos could be removed or encapsulated."
