Teachers can make an ally of smartphones in class
Teachers in B.C. are embracing smartphones as a teaching tool to add theatricality and reduce drudgery in the classroom, even as Ontario rushes to implement a ban on cellphones during instructional time.
“Yesterday I was leading my Grade 8s in estimating square roots,” she said. “I had them guess and then we asked Siri for the answer and she responded without me interrupting class while I used a calculator. The kids go, ‘Yeah,’ if they are right and ‘Boo,’ if they are wrong.” “I call that the little red schoolhouse of the mind, where the children are sitting in rows with their hands folded, attentive and ready to learn,” said Sechelt teacher Paddy McCallum, who has produced workshops for teachers on wireless tech. “That classroom doesn’t exist anymore, if it ever did.”
Teachers who want to exclude devices have students put their cellphones in wall-hangers during class or even offer charging to sweeten the deal, said McCallum. B.C.’s Ministry of Education is quite happy to let B.C’s school districts set policy on the use of wireless technology in schools, according to a spokesperson.“At the Vancouver school district there are currently no plans to address cellphones in classrooms at a district level,” said a district spokesperson. “Individual schools will have their own guidelines with cellphone use that meet the needs of their student and parent populations.
