United party Leader Kevin Falcon says he recognizes the risk of vote\u002Dsplitting, but isn\u0027t too concerned
Falcon’s central promise during the B.C. Liberal leadership race was to revitalize a party in a bid to recapture the voters who backed the NDP in the 2020 election, handing the Liberals their lowest seat count in three decades.
“The good news is we have lots of people coming out of the woodwork that are interested in running with us,” said Falcon, who is in the process of finding candidates for upcoming byelections in the ridings of Langford—Juan de Fuca, to replace former premier John Horgan, and Vancouver—Mount Pleasant to replace NDP MLA Melanie Mark.
Hamish Telford, a political scientist at the University of the Fraser Valley, said the B.C. United rebranding is a careful balancing act that tries to appease Conservative-minded supporters who have never liked the connection to the federal Liberals while at the same time courting the progressive urban voters they lost in the last election.
Conservative candidate Harman Bhangu received 12 per cent of the votes in the Surrey South byelection, a seat won handily by Sturko with 52 per cent of the vote.
