Jesseau spent hours sitting on planes during a Hawaii-New York-Vancouver journey with Erik Godoy, then more hours sitting in consulates trying to procure the Whitecaps’ new centreback an American visa. Then Jesseau returned to Vancouver, spending hours on his feet trudging through slush and snow finding housing for a new player.
The process is a long, convoluted one. Beginning with the initial negotiations, there’s agreeing to terms, working out pre-contracts because of the disparity in transfer windows between leagues, then acquiring visas for two different countries, and obtaining the occasionally elusive International Transfer Certificate from the player’s former federation. After that, the real work begins.

You’re going to write this in your resume,” said Jesseau. “One, that amount of attrition, and then two, on-boarding, it’s unheard of even for an expansion team. So it’s a huge pivot. There’s a plethora of work that needed to get done.
“Honestly, we didn’t speak a word of English to each other, but we had a great time, playing different music. You develop relationships with players through different ways,” she laughed. “We listened to a lot of Reggaeton … kind of Latin pop. For a guy from Tunisia, he knew a lot about Latin pop. You’ll hear a lot of that in the Whitecaps locker room because of the Spanish guys, but I didn’t expect that from a Tunisian guy.
