The proposed settlement filed on Tuesday in an Oakland, California, federal court would resolve a 5-year-old lawsuit revolving around allegations that Apple surreptitiously activated Siri to record conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with the virtual assistant for more than a decade.
“Siri has been engineered to protect user privacy from the beginning,” Apple said in a statement. “Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose.” Apple reiterated that belief in an August 2019 post that included an apology to users and explained changes that the company made shortly after a story inApple isn’t acknowledging any wrongdoing in the settlement, which still must be approved by US District Judge Jeffrey White. Lawyers in the case have proposed scheduling a February 14 court hearing in Oakland to review the terms.
