The tradition of Anzac Day has “changed over many years” as commemorations include the recent war veterans of Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and peacekeeping operations, says Australian War Memorial’s Head of Military History, Dr Karl James.

“It’s just a really good time to think and reflect on what it means to be an Australian as well as serve and reflect on the service and sacrifice,” Dr James told Sky News Australia.

“This place {Australian War Memorial} commemorates over 103,000 Australians who have died in war and war-like operations – 62,000 from the First World War, about 40,000 from the Second World War, as well as post-45 service.” He said out of the nearly one million Australians who served in World War Two, it’s believed “only about 5,000” of those veterans are still alive today.
