KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Azam Baki was appointed as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief due to his capabilities and independence hence there is no need to replace him, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In replying to a question by Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin , the Prime Minister acknowledged that Azam had been appointed during the tenure of former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin but said he had also decided to retain Azam due to the fact that MACC was an independent body.

He also said that he had no issues if the appointment of the post of MACC chief commissioner was referred to a bi-partisan Parliamentary Special Select Committee.Mas Ermieyati made the suggestion while asking if Azam's tenure would be continued or a new commissioner would be appointed to replace him.

There had been calls from Transparency International Malaysia as well as Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul for key appointments in the government to come under the purview of Parliament to ensure transparency and independence of such appointments.
