Kaitlin DeCoste of Antigonish gave birth to her fourth baby, a girl named Teddie Winslet DeCoste, who was born with a very rare heart condition. Despite the initial excitement, the family now faces the challenge of caring for a child with a serious medical condition.
ANTIGONISH, N.S. — When Kaitlin DeCoste of Antigonish found out she was pregnant with her fourth baby, the only worry she had was that it would be her fourth c-section.
“I could see his face was really pale and he was looking down. I immediately knew there was something wrong. I went in and saw Teddie – she was kicking and squawking. Healthy looking," she says. VT is a condition that involves a fast, abnormal heart rhythm . It starts in the heart’s lower chambers, called the ventricles. VT is defined as three or more heartbeats in a row, at a rate of more than 100 beats a minute.
"We stayed at the IWK for about a week, and we were taught how to do CPR and how to check her heart rate with a stethoscope. We were terrified leaving with her," Kaitlin recalls.
