To promote French, we do not need to reduce federal services to the English\u002Dspeaking minority in Quebec

I am fully committed to the protection and promotion of the French language across Canada, including in Quebec. Indeed, one can look at my record of amending federal bills to achieve this. The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit. Bill 96 is problematic because it has deprived all English-speaking Quebecers of the right to obtain such things as birth certificates or death certificates in English . And the general rule for most government services under the law is that only those who can access English schools can obtain services in English. This excludes hundreds of thousands who would consider themselves part of the English-speaking community, including thousands whose mother tongue is English.

I proposed the amendment because we can easily say that French is Quebec’s official language without referencing Bill 96. Why reference a law opposed by the members of a minority language community that is supposed to be protected under the OLA?Article content
