Do you have a go\u002Dto list of wine names you can count on when shopping?
I’m talking about producers you trust implicitly. So much so that you would buy a wine from that producer even if it were a new release of an unfamiliar label. I’m generally confident I can find something in any wine store, but I have four decades of experience to pull from and tens-of-thousands of tasting experiences. For the casual consumer, you must build your go-to list of producers or wines as you go until they’re committed to memory.
• Penfolds, most famous for Grange and a long list of high-end red wines, has thankfully filtered down the knowledge and juice under the watch of chief winemaker Peter Gago into their entry-level wines. A go-to red that is widely available is the Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, $20 — and it ages too. • From Spain, Miguel Torres offers a wide range of wines whose mandate also includes a major commitment to saving the planet by reducing its carbon footprint. Sangre de Toro Original, $17, is a very reliable mid-week red that works with beef tacos, hamburgers, grilled sausages and the like.
• Jean Claude Mas has a sprawling empire of Paul Mas’ vineyards and labels from the South of France, where the mantra is La Luxe Rural. It seems you can bask in the luxury of the countryside and eat and drink locally for very little. Despite excellent value, Paul Mas is also vastly under-represented in our market. Our pick: Paul Mas Grenache Noir, $15.Article content
