As the rains continue, plenty of indoor time is available to learn about wines outside of your comfort zone.

One grape to consider adding to your repertoire is Grenache, as it’s known in France, Australia and most of the New World, including here in B.C.West Coast Table

Unlike the widely popular monovarietal mainstream grapes, Grenache or, more appropriately, Grenache Noir is more likely to be linked to an appellation or blend than its grape name. Grenache is the principal component in almost every Southern Rhône red blend, and it’s likely best known as the base grape found in most Châteauneuf du Pape, Cotes du Rhône and Gigondas.Article content

Bush vines are no strangers to the Australians, where extensive old Grenache plantings have yielded some terrific bottles, albeit a bit more boisterous than their European counterparts. So where to start: We have always enjoyed the Paul Mas Grenache Noir, Languedoc, France, $14.99; Campo de Borsão Garnacha, Aragon, Spain, $15.99; Las Moradas de San Martin Initio Garnacha, $39.99; Brunel de la Gardine Cotes du Rhone, France $23.99; Famille Perrin Cotes du Rhone Reserve, France $18.99; and Les Halos de Jupiter Côtes Du Rhône 2015, France, $26.99 represent some affordable Rhone Valley options.
