Papua New Guinea’s move to cease issuing import permits for Australian raw poultry days came just ahead of a visit by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Papua New Guinea ceased issuing import permits for Australian raw poultry days ahead of a visit by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in a trade move some viewed as political manoeuvring.

The unofficial trade ban came after a push by PNG’s poultry industry before Christmas to claim uncooked chicken from Australia contained “exotic poultry diseases” and was “illegal”.The NationalThe letter to importers repeated the accusations, saying “The Poultry Industry Association has raised concerns to the government through the Minister of Agriculture of biosecurity risks”.Exporters were deeply sceptical about the reasoning.

MDM, a chicken mince that is a staple in PNG, as well as raw poultry products from New Zealand, are unaffected by the permit stoppage.
