SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The annual Rotary Book Sale for Literacy is back, hoping once again to instill a love of reading in Summerside students and the community at large.
In 2021, the sale raised enough money to send every SIS student home with a new book for the summer; the following year, organizers were able to expand the initiative to every junior high student in the city. They plan to do so again this year. “When we think about it, that’s so many books back in our community,” she said. “Those books then get passed around to siblings and to friends, and we’re just trying to fill bookshelves with books that teens will read.”Kaelin Heyman and Dawn Kirk are two Grade 9 students who helped with the book drive on Oct. 13. Heyman is a bit of a bookworm, drawn to fiction like fantasy, while Kirk described herself as more of a “picky reader.

This year’s goal is the same, and Anna MacDonald, volunteer co-ordinator with the Summerside Rotary Club, said it would be wonderful to achieve that again.
For MacDonald, it’s a great feeling to be able to put on this event and help get books into the hands of young people.
